Comments:
Curly and quilted maple are two of my favorite
woods to work with. They are not as oily as cocobolo or bloodwood but
they are just as hard. You can't machine plane, hand plane or use a
router on these maples as they will chip. I spend a great deal of time
hand sanding each board. They are also very expensive woods and can run
from $245 to $425 for a single board (re:
quilted maple and
curly maple).
Each side of this box is solid book matched curly
maple, also known as tiger maple or fiddleback maple (used in fine
violins). The tiger stripes flow from the bottom center away to the
top outside while the grain runs horizontally. The corners were
assembled using hand cut 1/4" box joints and this can be seen from the
underside of the box. The inside of the box sides are lined with 1/8"
solid walnut and the bottom is walnut veneered maple.
The top panel is solid curly maple, but this time
the tiger stripes in the maple run perpendicular to the grain. The
frame is walnut with hard maple splines structurally securing the
corners for generations of enjoyment.
The legs are made of 1/4" walnut and are curved to
compliment the curves on bottom of the main box itself.
The brass chain holding the lid in place is the
finest one I could find (re:
chain). This box took aver 60 hours to make and was a
pleasure to create. I am very proud of this box and it is one of the
finest showpieces I have ever created.
