After making the body of solid walnut with 3/8" box
joints I created the hinges using 1/4" walnut and 1/8" maple. I used
brass pins to hold the handmade hinges together. The top was then
created form one solid outstanding specimen of curly maple that also
is known as tiger maple or fiddleback maple (used in fine violins).
This is encased in solid walnut with hard maple splines. The base is
solid walnut.
The hinges are supported in place using handmade
walnut dowels on the top and maple ones on the back. They extend into
the body but do not go all the way through.
The inside bottom is lines in high quality black
velvet.
