The body of this
unique box is solid lacewood, it is a native hardwood to Queensland,
Australia. It possesses one of the most unique
grain patterns of all the exotics hardwoods, and is most easily
recognized by its large rays. It is a reddish-brown color with
a moderately coarse even texture. The splines (also called keys) that hold the miters
together are vertical and can be seen from the top and the bottom.
They are also made of cherry, as is the accent wood in the top and
legs.
The accent wood in the lid is solid wedge as are the splines in the corners. The handle is cocobolo and it is pinned to the
lid with hardwood dowels. I used brass pins to hinge the top and
mitered the back of the lid at 15 degrees to allow the lid to stay
open a 100 degrees. The center of the lid is solid lacewood as all the
accent woods.
To make the
legs I made 2 different sets, one out of cocobolo and one out of
cherry, then I joined them together. Just like the body and top, the
legs are not stained or dyed, nor veneered. They are solid wood.
The interior has a 1/8" solid cherry panel on the front that keeps the
handle from touching the box. The interior bottom is also cherry. |
